Laguna Niguel is a family friendly, suburban city located in the heart of Orange County, CA. The name of the city came from the words Laguna, which is Spanish for the word lagoon, and Niguili, a name of a Native American village once that once roamed near Aliso Creek.

Laguna Niguel sits in the southeastern corner of Orange County. It’s very close to the Pacific Ocean. At one point, the city of Laguna Niguel owned the land near Salt Creek state beach, therefore classifying it as a coastal city. The city is surrounded by the affluent and upscale cities of Aliso Viejo, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Dana Point, Mission Viejo, and San Juan Capistrano.

The area of Laguna Niguel is 14.79 sq mi (38.31 km2). It consists of 14.74 sq mi (38.18 km2) of land and 0.05 sq mi (0.13 km2) or 0.35% water.

A Short History of Laguna Niguel

Laguna Niguel has its roots from the original Rancho Niguel Mexican land grant. In 1959 the Laguna Niguel Corporation was formed to develop the area as one of California’s first master-planned communities.

According to historical records, the Acjachemen Native Americans were the first settlers in Laguna Niguel. The tribe may have had a village called ‘Niguili’ near the confluence of Aliso Creek and Sulphur Creek. Laguna Niguel now serves as a family friendly suburban community in the heart of Orange County.
